Dental Screening
About
dental screening in general
Teeth
and gum tissue problems are often preventable, or due to
early detection, more easily treatable, if one attends dental
screenings frequently - at least twice a year. During dental
screenings, besides examining the teeth, we also examine
the gum tissue (recession, inflammation, pockets, tartar
build-up, etc.), as well as the entire oral cavity. The dental
screenings (the inspection and examination) are either performed
by licensed hygienists or by licensed dentists. However,
the following consultation and treatment are exclusively
performed by licensed dentists. Exceptions are teeth cleaning
and tartar removal, which are performed by a licensed hygienists,
who are experts in this field by training.
Inspection First, we inspect the
exterior of the patients face to determine if there
are flaws in symmetry, shape or color, between the
two halves.
Next, we inspect the oral cavity: including the tongue, sublingual area, palate,
and the examination and palpation of the internal surface of the cheeks. This
is the dental cancer screening examination.
We examine tartar build-up on teeth and in possible pockets, which could cause
gum inflammation (gingivitis) and lead to tooth mobility and tooth loss.
Examination With
the help of a mirror and explorer we inspect each tooth,
paying particular attention to old restorations and
prostodontics. The positive findings are saved on a
computer. Our
job is assisted by the intraoral camera - an examination
tool that resembles an electric toothbrush. The built-in
microcamera projects an enlarged
color image of the
area of the oral cavity that is being inspected .
This tool enables us to easily identify cavities
independent of their location (i.e. inner). We position
the monitor, so that the patient can view the entire
examination with his or her own eyes - in effect
the patient is "discovering" the abnormality
along with the doctor. This is important. The images
speak for themselves, and help the patient understand
the suggested treatment plan, as well as give them
an appreciation for the need to intervene. We
examine the teeth and the surrounding bone structure
with the aid of a computerized radio visiograph,
which is a special dental x-ray, where a computer
sensor replaces conventional film (digital x-ray).
The finished picture is immediately displayed on
a monitor for the patient, thus the dentist is
able to show an enlarged image of the possibleabnormality.
Another advantage of this machine is the significant
reduction of radiation compared to conventional
x-ray machines. We save all the images along with
the tooth-map and images obtained with the intraoral
camera on a computer, which makes them easily accessible
in the future, and serves as a good comparison
between pre and post treatment conditions. Fees
