RECONSTRUCTION OF FRACTURED TOOTH - WITH CAST POST BUILD UP

Indication

The purpose of dentistry is to ensure that the patients' teeth are healthy and complete. This is why the replacement or treatment of sick teeth is important. If only the top portion of the tooth fractures, while the root remains intact, the fractured portion can be reconstructed with a crown built on a post and core placed in the root. This method preserves the adjoining teeth, because it does not require them to be prepared, as they would have to be for a bridge.

Preparation for treatment

It is a fact, that a post can only be placed in a root canal-treated tooth. Therefore, an obturation must be completed first (see root canal). Only 24 hours after the obturation is it possible to place a post in the tooth. We take a digital x-ray in each instance, to make sure that the surrounding area around the apex is not inflamed. After this we determine, whether we can use the root for the construction of the cast post build-up.

The reconstruction process

After preparing the post space, we take an impression of the lower and upper jaw. In a following appointment, we cement the metal post, prepared by the dental technician, into the root. The area above the gum tissue will now resemble a prepared tooth. At this point we take a new impression, from which the dental technician will fabricate a crown. We cement the crown onto the abutment during the next appointment.

Contraindication for a cast post build up

If the root is curved, or if a portion of the tooth is fractured subgingivally; or in the case of multi rooted molars, if the canal is too narrow.
