Restylane
is a clear, transparent, viscous solution, distributed in
sterile glass syringes with 30G needles. The product is exclusively
for one time use only. Restylane contains
concentrated hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occuring complex
sugar found in the skin and subcutaneous tissues
as an important structural element. Hyaluronic acid is one
of the few substances that have the same structure in all
living organisms. Restylane delivered into
or immediately under the skin restores volume
and thereby makes wrinkles disappear by "lifting" them,
or for example may augment lips to the desired size. The
injected substance binds to tissues naturally and usually
does not induce allergic reaction or rejection.
Use
Restylan is injected into
appropriate layers of the skin to correct deformities of
skin contour (creases, wrinkles) and to augment lips. Correction
of wrinkles is most likely to be succesful in areas of the
face where wrinkles can be smoothed by stretching the skin
manually. Extent and duration of correction depends on the
characteristics or the wrinkle, local tissue pressure, and
on the depth of the injection. Very deep wrinkles are frequently
very difficult to successfully correct. After administration
of Restylane some usual reactions are to be expected: erythema,
mild swelling, itching, transient change in color at the
site of injection. These symptoms resolve spontaneously within
24-48 hours on the skin and 2-7 days on the lips. Occasionally
the areas treated with Restylane feel transiently firm. This
may take weeks even months to resolve. The patient should
not expose the treated area to intense heat (solarium) or
extreme cold at least until the post-treatment erythema and
swelling disappear. If after Restylane treatment laser dermabrasion
or chemical peels or any other treatment of the skin is considered
it needs to be remembered that all these may cause an inflammatory
reaction at the site of injection. Therefore the above mentioned
interventions should only be performed several months after
Restylane treatment.
Possible complications
Hypersensitivity reaction
has been reported in approximately one in
every two thousand cases. This presents
as inflammation and induration of tissues at the injection
site, sometimes accompanied by edema of the surrounding tissues.
In some patients erythema of the skin, local tenderness and
rarely rash has been observed. These reactions may occur
shortly after administration of the injection or after a
2-4 week delay, in mild or moderate form and heal after an
average of two weeks. If this does not happen we will start
drug treatment.
