With
an excellent safety record, the active ingredient, polymethyl-methacrylate
has been used in medicine since 1936. Polymethyl-methacrylate
(Artecoll) better known as plexi, is one of the constituents
of the bone cement PALACOS, it is used in ocular prostheses,
repair of skull defects, pacemaker casing and various other
prostheses. Polymethyl-methacrylate (ARTECOLL) has
never ever caused any unpleasant side effects and
certainly no side effects that would have endangered the
health of the patient. Its effect is lasting (at least 4-5
years), since, as opposed to collagen that is absorbed in
3-5 months, Artecoll induces the host organism to produce
collagen i.e. the 30-40 micron diameter wholly smooth-surfaced
microspheres are packaged in collagen produced by the host
within 2-3 months and these "self-made" collagen
capsules fill out the space underneath the wrinkles, thereby
elevating them. Since the effect is dependent on the reaction
of the host that varies from patient to patient - i. e. the
connective tissue reaction is not the same in everyone -
while in 60 % of the patients formation of the collagen coating
is very intense, the remaining 40 % require another treatment
2-3 months after the first session, that will lead to the
desired effect. Artecoll is delivered under the wrinkles
in the form of an injection.
