Numerous
materials present in the oral cavity can deposit on the tooth
surface. These materials can be soft, hard, transparent or
colored. They are significant because they play an important
part in the formation of periodontal disease. Plaque forms
on improperly cleaned tooth surfaces and crowns and bridges.
Plaques are mainly composed of bacteria. When a plaque calcifies (calcium-carbonate-limestone deposits), tartar forms. Different
agents (for example coffee, tea, cola, smoking) can discolor
teeth, as well as tartar. Tartar usually deposits either
supra or sub gingivally. In greatest concentration, tartar
builds up across from the orifices of great salivary glands.
Complications
If we do not remove plaque
regularly by brushing our teeth after eating, the tartar
that develops, especially under the gums, might cause inflammation.
In this case, the gum tissue reddens, becomes painful, bleeds
during brushing, and separates from the tooth. Pockets might
develop around the teeth, the inflammation might spread deeper
into the periodontal tissues, and eventually bone
loss might
result. The teeth could start to migrate, become mobile,
or even fall out.
Oral Hygiene
We will describe and teach
to each patient how to use the tools for effective oral hygiene.
The honing of proper tooth brushing technique plays a major
part in maintaining the patients gums, teeth and restorations.
Doing so extends the life of teeth.
Tartar removal
This is the basic treatment
plan that we employ when treating inflamed gum tissue and
periodontal diseases. Removal of tartar build-up (cleaning)
procedure removes plaque, tartar build-up as well as other
deposits and discolorations. Prior to the procedure we anesthetize the mucosa with a 10% Lidocaine spray. We perform the treatment
with an ULTRASONIC SCALER.
This device, with the help of crystal induced vibrations,
effectively removes any build-up. We perform the more delicate,
especially sub-gingival treatments, with hand instruments.
After the removal of the tartar build-up, we polish the surface
of the teeth. Smooth enamel surfaces of the teeth are less
favorable for plaque attachment.
Postoperative care
After plaque removal, cervical
sensitivity (to cold, warm, sweet, or sour) might result.
This sensitivity can be eliminated within 1-2 weeks by using
Sensitive toothpaste, or Fluor gel. The time needed for tartar
build-up to redevelop, largely depends on individual factors,
such as eating habits and the effectiveness of personal oral
hygiene.
