INFORMATION ON PLASTIC SURGERY OF LABIA

The deformation

On the pudendum, mostly due to developmental disorder one- or both sided enlargement of labia minor may occur, causing several functional and esthetical problems for the patient. This deformation due to its location often causes serious psychical problems; in fact this is the most important base of recommendation of the operation.

Possible treatments

Essence of the plastic surgery of labia is to make enlarged labia symmetrical, satisfying in size by the operation. Patients have to discuss honestly their expectations regarding the operation with their surgeon but it is also have to be kept in mind that the expected result means improvement of the current state but never the absolute perfect, ideal state. The esthetical intervention improves outward, basis self-confidence.

One day surgery

"One day surgery" means, that patients can leave the outpatient center on their own feet, accompanied by an escort, after few hours of observation, and continue the healing process in their own home. "One day surgery" requires strict professional, social, and various other preconditions that are discussed at the stage of the consultation when the need for surgery becomes clear. (i.e. good general health, absence of serious systemic disease, patient must take responsibility for arrangement of transportation and home care, must have phone to contact the clinic or the surgeon if necessary, etc).

Examination and consultation

The patient is evaluated by the plastic surgeon prior to the procedure. After the exam the surgeon discusses options with the patient that might affect his or her decisions with regard to the surgery. At this point we also discuss the lab tests that are necessary, or other possible additional examinations (e.g. inner medical), types of surgical anesthesia, possible complications, requirements for home care, phases of healing and anything else that is necessary for the patient to determine which treatment option to chose.

The operation

The operation is generally carried out by local anaesthesia, rarely in genaral anesthesia. Local anaesthesia means injection of the operative area with 1% Lidocaine solution. The intervention is diuturnal therefore before local anaesthesia a so-called preparing injection consisting sedative and pain killer is given. During the operation the enraged labia minor - due to the previously defined lines- are reduced ibn size and following the careful haemostasis the wound is closed by plastic stitches.

Possible complications

No doctor can guarantee that a surgical intervention is free from complication. Even after the most careful medical intervention complications can occur. Early complications are post-bleeding, inflammation, wound separation and can be well cured if recognised in early stage. The 2-3 hours long post operative monitoring serves the intervention of such symptoms. The so-called cheloid which is bulged scar occurs very rarely during recovery on this area, but can be treated in three months from operation by injection cure. Late complication is sensation disorder of the clitoris. The mentioned complications can be avoided by the correct operative method. The process has risks just like other operations, but it is a common performed procedure at our clinic and every one of our patients is satisfied.

Postoperative care

Patients who underwent surgery with local anesthesia are discharged 2-3 hours after the procedure, patents leave 10-12 hours after surgeries under general anesthesia with the help of an escort. During this time the vital functions (blood pressure, urine and stool output) stabilize. The patient must take responsibility for arrangement of home care. We recommend light activity and rest at home. Taking of antibiotics and analgesics are recommended. Swelling and blue-violet discoloration of the surgical area is a normal postoperative phenomenon. Application of icepacks for a few days can diminish these symptoms, the hematomas are slowly resorbed. For swelling of the eyes eye-drops are recommended. The first follow-up is at one week, at this point the pressure dressing is removed. Sutures are removed two to three weeks postoperatively. Wearing of the headband at home for the night is recommended for six more weeks. The desired effects on the face will be obvious only after 6-8 weeks.
