Department
of Gynecology
The Department of Gynecology of
Ars Medica Laser Clinic provides the highest quality
professional care based on confidentiality and mutual
trust between doctor and patient in the following areas:
-
General gynecological
screening examinations (bimanual examination, colposcopy,
cytology). Video-colposcopy, a new diagnostic procedure,
is also available to our patients. With the help of
a small camera in the microscope the image of the cervical
os is projected on a TV-screen that the patient can
watch simultaneously with her doctor during the procedure.
-
The uterus and ovaries can be evaluated
quickly and painlessly with transvaginal ultrasonography.
Video documentation of findings may be provided upon request.
Testing for Human Papilloma virus (predisposing factor
for malignant gynecologic tumors, mainly of the uterus)
(HPV typing).
To
date almost 70 types of the Human Papilloma virus have
been isolated from the human body. Of these, 14 types
play a prominent role in infections of the uterine
cervix. Studies have shown that while approximately
2 to 5 % of the healthy female population carries one
of the 14 HPV types, the prevalence is as high as 90%
among women with mucosal abnormalities, cytologic changes,
or cancer of the uterine cervix, highlighting the potential
role of this virus in the formation of cervical cancer.
Nine of the fourteen HPV types that cause infections
of the uterine cervix are considered high tumor risk,
based on the fact that in the presence of certain coexisting
conditions they are strongly associated with development
of cervical cancer. On the other hand presence of the
five "low risk" HPV types does not predict increased
risk of malignancy. Based on these facts determining
the HPV type in patients with mucosal or cytologic
changes of the uterine cervix is crucial for choosing
the optimal treatment, which is different depending
on risk types.
If
the exam reveals low risk type, the risk for the patient
is small. There is no need for urgent treatment or
surgical intervention since these changes frequently
show spontaneous regression. At the same time these
patients need to be followed closely. On the other
hand in case of high risk types treatment should be
initiated as soon as possible.
In summary: The method proposed by us has the following advantages: Determination
of the HPV type aids us in choosing the optimal therapy and at the same
time complements the cytologic and colposcopic examinations as a very
important diagnostic procedure for the prevention of cervical cancer.
-
Evaluation and treatment of chronic vaginal
inflammation (usually accompanied by vaginal discharge)
resistant to conventional treatment (Bacterial cultures
with antibiotic sensitivity).
-
Evaluation of sterility.
-
Counseling on contraception optimal for age and social
situation and related medical evaluation.
-
Evaluation before interruption
of pregnancy (and performing
the procedure with the latest available techniques
in the referral center)
-
Evaluation and treatment of conditions that might cause
sexual dysfunction.
-
Evaluation and treatment of menstrual disorders.
-
Evaluation and treatment of endocrine disorders of the
female reproductive system.
-
Evaluation of problems related to menopause including
the interdisciplinary area of osteoporosis,
optimizing hormone replacement therapy and prescription
of other
medications for the treatment of osteoporosis.
Of special importance
among our services is Laser surgery that enables us to
provide some gynecological procedures
quickly and painlessly with the least
possible complications. Among these the following deserve
special mention:
-
Treatment of benign changes of the cervical os (ectropion)
-
Removal of
areas from the cervical os that were deemed "suspicious" during
cancer screening
or colposcopy for further histological testing.
-
Removal of Condylomata from external genitals
-
Hymen repair surgery (hymenoplasty).
-
Removal of verruccous changes
and moles.
Further special
diagnostic and surgical procedures that are beyond the
scope of our clinic are provided in our referral center
after the initial evaluation.
As mentioned in the introduction, the
crux of our philosophy is efficient care for our patients.
One day surgery - that has long been available in developed
countries - by faster recovery helps to save time and
avoid the inconvenience that would otherwise be associated
with a few days of hospital stay.
