Atheroma
is an embedded, dense, painless tumour occurring in most
cases on the face, especially on the scalp directly under
the skin; its size can be from 1-2 cm to several
cm, and
it consists of a connective tissue coverage (capsule) and
a mush-like, dusty-white or yellow content. Atheroma evolves when
the growing
tallow closes the outlet tube of the sebaceous gland of the
skin; meanwhile the gland keeps producing tallow that
stepwise enlarges the tube till it reaches the above-mentioned
size. In some cases for circular insufficiencies and bacterial
infections the otherwise benign tumour can inflame.
The lipoma is a moveable,
soft-to-touch, painless node that can be observed under skin;
it is one of the most common skin problems. Mostly they are
on arms, legs and body, but they can also occur on the neck,
head or face. Lipoma is commonly found in adults from 40
to 60 years of age and is rarer in women than men.
Mainly lipomas are smaller
than 5 cm but in some extreme cases they can enlarge to greater
sizes. In this case it
is advisory to consult your doctor, since even huge fatty
nodes are painless; they can lead to numerous other inconveniences.
Deformations are the most embarrassing if they are on visible
areas like face. Nodes consisting of lipocytes are usually
harmless, if they do not cause any ha inconvenience or esthetical,
cosmetic problem, their removal is not necessary.
Preparation for surgery
Before operation a medical
examination is performed. Afterwards the doctor informs the
patient about the result of the examination, the suggested
medical intervention, anaesthesia and post-operative tasks.
Operation can be carried out right after examination and
consultation or at a later date of time. Patients have to
sign a declaration before the operation is performed in which
they entrust the clinic with the intervention.
Operation of atheroma and lipoma
Operation is carried out in
local anaesthesia; this means 1% Lidocain injection shot
directly under skin with a very thin needle. Following the
skin-opening the deformation is removed with its capsule
and after haemostasis the wound finally closed with plastic
suture. The removed part is sent to biopsy of which result
is provided written to the patient at the control-examination.
Possible complications
No doctor can guarantee that
a surgical intervention is free from complication. Even after
the most careful medical intervention complications can occur.
Occurrence of the possible early complications: post-bleeding,
inflame are under 1% during our 15 year-long practice. Among
late complications re-growth of atheroma and lipoma has to
be mentioned what happens if the capsule of the lipoma is
not completely removed during the surgery. In this case the
repeated surgical intervention is performed under our warranty
i.e. it is not subject of charge.
Postoperative care
The received bandage possibly
should not contact water for one week - till removal of suture-
wound recovers along this period of time. In case of operation
of inflamed atheroma the recovery process can take two-three
weeks, meanwhile several control-examinations have to be
attended; patients receive detailed information during the
first examination from the surgeon about this.
