INFORMATION ON TIBIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

The deformation

After a certain age - usually following putting on and then losing weight - skin may stretches, flaccidity may occur in most cases on the inner area of the tibia causing esthetical problems. This deformation often goes with fat increase together.

Possible treatments

Plastic surgery of tibia changes shape of tibia, tension of its skin, and aim of operation is to recondition the best possible result, ensuring a younger more comfortable appearance. Patients have to discuss honestly their expectations regarding the operation with their surgeon but it is also have to be kept in mind that the expected result means improvement of the current state but never the absolute perfect, ideal state. The esthetical intervention improves outward, increases self-confidence.

Examination and consultation

The patient is evaluated by the plastic surgeon prior to the procedure. After the exam the surgeon discusses options with the patient that might affect his or her decisions with regard to the surgery (the desired changes in form or shape). Usually we preform this operation in general anesthesia. Then we inform the patient whether he or she is a candidate for one day surgery. At this point we also discuss one day surgery as a special treatment option, the lab tests that are necessary, types of surgical anesthesia, possible complications, requirements for home care, phases of healing, possible problems during the healing process, and anything else that is necessary for the patient to determine which treatment option to chose.

One day surgery

"One day surgery" means, that patients can leave the outpatient center on their own feet, accompanied by an escort, within 24 hours of surgery (usually after few hours of observation), and continue the healing process in the familiar confines of their own home. "One day surgery" requires strict professional, social, and various other preconditions that are discussed at the stage of the consultation when the need for surgery becomes clear. (i.e. good general health, absence of serious systemic disease, patient must take responsibility for arrangement of transportation and home care, must have phone to contact the clinic or the surgeon if necessary, etc).

The operation

The essence of intervention is shape correction of tibias. In case local fat redundancy is to be observed on these areas then first of all liposuction is performed, and next the redundant skin and tissues under such skin-surplus is removed due to a bay-leaf shaped or even extent to inner part of knee by T cut made high on the inner part of tibia, possibly near to the undies line.

If the deformation is more serious than the nates are also involved into the tibial plastic surgery. In the first phase of the operation patients lie on their back and afterwards they are turned to their belly in order to carry out skin and fat tissue cut of nates. Following the careful haemostasis the wound is closed by plastic stitches. Often aspirant tube is placed into the operative area in order to lead the evolving immune-serum away. After the operation patient gets a special compression trousers that is to be worn for six weeks.

Possible complications

No doctor can guarantee that a surgical intervention is free from complication. Even after the most careful medical intervention complications can occur. Early complications are immune-serum accumulation, post-bleeding, inflammation, skin necrosis, wound separation and can be well cured if recognised in early stage. The one day post operative monitoring serves the intervention of such symptoms. If you recognise any little sign of emerge of complications after leaving the clinic (e.g. fever, shaking ague), you may contact immediately your surgeon to solve your problem. Late complications are sensation disorder, which is in most cases only temporary, morbid scar formation, "over-formation of scar" or cheloid. This can be treated in three months from operation by injection cure.

Postoperative care

After the 1-2 days of post operative monitoring time patient is ready to leave the clinic and can go home with accompany. Previously we remove the aspirants. Taking antibiotics and pain killers if required is recommended after the operation. In the stage next to the intervention relaxation, ice of the operative area and wear of compression dress is recommended for six weeks. Control examination takes place one week and stitch removal two or three weeks after the operation.
